Japan Theorized Dignity for the Bourgeoisie”

  1. A book called, “The Confessions of Lady Nijo” has many relations too bourgeoise in Japan. She was part of the Japanese Imperial Court and considered elite. Lady Nijo came from a fairly influential branch of the Minamoto clan and, given the high rank of her father. She shows the power of the bourgeoisie in the 13th century.

  2. Dear Allen,

If she’s called “lady” (whatever the Japanese is, Japan was much like England in its hierarchical social orders), she’s not bourgeois!

    Regards,

    Deirdre
